Cars are one of the few remaining visual memories that we have from the 1970’s. It was a time when cars were larger than life, made of steel and metal, and designed to be noticed and enjoyed by all your senses.
I photograph cars from this era that fit especially well into its urban environment, mostly in Brooklyn, New York. They say that over time dogs take on the look of its owner. The same could be said for these cars. They fit perfectly where they “live”, whether in spirit or visual attributes like color, material, texture, or lines. While parked in the city it screams to be taken for a ride out West. I’ve long had unfulfilled road trip fantasies to follow in the footsteps of Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, or Jack Kerouac.
This is a personal interpretative portrait project of an era gone by. It’s not about perfectly restored cars but rather a flashback about individuality, identity, and attitude. The make, year, model, engine size, etc, is not really important. These cars were not bought for transportation alone. They were someone’s pride and joy, told a story about who you were, and were washed and cared for by its owners.
The body of work grows over time and is part of my intuitive process that searches the urban landscape for scenes or subject matters that are graphic, quiet, and reveals a utilitarian or poetic beauty. I love everything from the 1970’s including the more vernacular style of photography.
